Two EI faculty Awarded Over HK$12 Million Green Tech Fund
Prof Minhua Shao, Director of Energy Institute and Professor of Chemical & Biological Engineering and Prof Francesco Ciucci, Associate Professor of Chemical & Biological Engineering and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering have been awarded the Green Tech Fund with an overall grant of more than HK$12 million.
Prof Shao was awarded around HK$9 million to his project “Development of High Performance and Long Life Hydrogen Fuel Cells Stacks” in the area of “Energy saving and efficiency”. In this 3-year project, Prof Shao’s team aims to develop key materials and integrate them into fuel cell stacks to reduce the cost and improve the performance and life span of fuel cells. It is expected to address the problems of high precious-metal loading in fuel cells, poor performance and low durability.
Prof Ciucci was awarded around HK$3.2 million to conduct research on “Green Hydrogen Production from Active Flow Membraneless Elecrolyzers” in the area of “Decarbonisation”. In this 3-year project, Prof Ciucci’s team aims to develop an active flow membraneless electrolyzer (AFME) technology and to demonstrate sustainable production of H2 with lower production costs, while maintaining high efficiency and purity.
The Green Tech Fund of HK$200 million was set up by the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2020 to provide more focused funding support for research and development projects which can help Hong Kong decarbonise and enhance environmental protection.
